REACH Health Fair

The 12th Annual REACH Health Fair was held on Wed. Nov. 12th. Over 1223 participants came to learn about how to improve all areas of their health from 58 local health-related vendors.New Department Chair

Health Promotion Internship Luncheon

The 3rd Annual Health Promotion Internship luncheon was held May 16, 2008. The interns and their supervisors come together to celebrate and showcase the impact our students make in the community. This semester, 11 interns worked over 1350 hours planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion programs. Alli Tuschida won the College of Education Dean's Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award for her multi-media presentation on her internship research project with Central District Health Department's Fit and Fall Proof program.

Sports First Aid and Injury Managment

Sports First Aid and Injury ManagmentDr. Ronald Pfeiffer, LAT, ATC, Dept. Chair, continues to publish textbooks in the general field of sports injury care. The most recent title is Sports First Aid and Injury Managment, published in cooperation with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), published by Jones & Bartlett, Inc., and is co-authored with Alton Thygerson and Nicholas F. Palmieri. The book is targeted towards youth sport coaches and outlines care and prevention strategies for 18 different sports. The other title that is now in it's 5th edition is Concepts of Athletic Training, co-authored with Brent C. Mangus, and has been in print since 1995. This latest edition represents over a decade of evolution and revision of the previous editions in an effort to better serve students considering careers as athletic trainers, K-12 physical educators, or coaches. Key concepts pertaining to the field of athletic training are presented in a comprehensive, logically sequential manner that will assist future professionals in making the correct decisions when confronted with an activity-related injury or illness in their scope of practice. This book is also published by Jones & Bartlett, Inc. of Boston, MA.

 

Dr. Tyler Johnson

Dr. Tyler Johnson recently completed data collection and statistical analyses on two large-scale youth pedometer studies looking at the step count patterns of African-American, Hispanic, Caucasian, Native-American, and Asian-American youth and of youth living in different metropolitan regions (urban, suburban, rural). One manuscript has been submitted to a peer-reviewed research journal and the other manuscript is in preparation. He is also currently working with colleagues (Dr.Bell & Dr. Shimon) on a pilot study to ascertain the step count patterns of youth during various activities (i.e., team sports, individual sports, etc.) in Physical Education class.

Dr. Linda Petlichkoff

Dr. Linda Petlichkoff passed her Player Ability Test Equivalence for the LPGA Teaching and Professional Division, which is the first step in applying for membership.

Dave Hammons

Dave Hammons Since graduating from the BSU ATEP in 1995, Dave has served as a collegiate Athletic Trainer / Instructor in Florida, Missouri and most recently North Carolina. He holds an MEd from the University of Missouri, is a Performance Enhancement Specialist through NASM, and is a member of the USOC Sports Medicine Committee. He has served on various professional committees serving Athletic Training and has been active in campus wellness organizations.

Dr. Lynda Ransdell

Dr. Lynda Ransdell is putting the finishing touches on her book titled: “Designing effective physical activity programs” to be published by Human Kinetics early in 2009. In addition, she is serving on the Editorial Board for the Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal and she Chaired the abstract review committee for the Exercise Science Division of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention. She made 3 presentations in the Spring. In January, she presented “The Female Athlete Triad: An important issue for female cycling coaches and athletes” at the USA Cycling Conference on Women in Cycling in Colorado Springs, CO. In May, she presented at the Kentucky Dental Association Meeting in Louisville, KY. Her presentations were titled: “Finding your inner Xena: Strategies for success for women exercisers” and “How to become the biggest loser—without going to Hollywood.” She had an exceptionally productive year in that she published 8 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 3 book chapters.

Dr. Caile Spear

Dr. Caile Spear has given several presentations on service learning this year. First, she gave a presentation titled “Service-learning: Engaging students and community” at the Joint Conference of the American Association of Health Education and National Association of Health Education Centers in Cincinnatti, Ohio. At the Western Region Campus Compact Consortium Continuums of Service Conference, in Portland, OR, she teamed with Kara Brascia to give a presentation titled “From novice to advanced: Employing a phased approach to service-learning faculty development.” Finally, she and Dr. Aileen Hale gave a presentation titled “Increasing cultural competency through refugee focused service-learning projects: Bringing the world home” at the International Service-Learning Conference in Orem, UT. Dr. Spear is still living in the residence halls (this is her second year!) and she is working hard to help coordinate the BSU Campus Health Fair, scheduled for Wed. Nov. 12th from 10-3pm in the SUB Jordan Ballroom.

Dr. Shawn Simonson

In August, Dr. Simonson gave an invited presentation titled: “The neglected regulator: A discussion of the immune response to endurance exercise in the heat” at the” Hotter ‘n Hell Science and Medicine in Cycling” conference in Wichita Falls, TX. In October, Dr. Simonson is scheduled to do a presentation on “Needs Analyses” for Strength and Conditioning Coaches at the Idaho Meeting of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
