Instruction in factors involved in the selection and evaluation of health services and products, emphasizing quackery awareness, consumer protection laws and organizations, and health insurance considerations.

Course Content

Knowledge

  1. Define consumer health and its importance in the health marketplace.
  2. Identify the nature and sources of health quackery and fraud.
  3. Analyze the accuracy of health information provided by the media.
  4. Identify organizations, magazines and newsletters that will provide reliable information on consumer health.
  5. Discuss the nature, safety and effectiveness of cosmetic products and surgery.
  6. Identify consumer health issues pertinent to women.
  7. Describe questionable nutrition promotion and promoters.
  8. Discuss the nature and effectiveness of various weight control organizations.
  9. List guidelines for the selection and use of exercise activities.
  10. Identify the types, components and problems of health and dental insurance plans in the U.S.
  11. Identify federal laws, agencies and functions designed to protect the consumer.
  12. List federal, state and local consumer organizations and their functions.

Skills

  1. Critique the effectiveness of various media sources in communication about health products and services.
