Chapter 5. Science-Based Health Care

Intelligent consumers should locate and use a primary physician (or medical group) who provides care that is scientific, considerate, and compassionate. They should take an active role in dealing with health professionals. They should endeavor to understand the nature of any health problem they experience and the mechanisms and potential hazards of treatment. They should not hesitate to ask questions about fees or request consultations for complicated problems. Good medical care should be a partnership between patient and physician. It should include preventive approaches and periodic examinations, as well as effective two-way communication.
