The SDE sponsored various “Wellness Forums” across the state discussing wellness policies for Idaho.  The District III Wellness Forum was held February 24th at the Hampton Inn on Eagle Road.   •   Meridian School District elementary and secondary PE/Health specialists participated in “HEAP” –The Health Education Assessment Project sponsored by the SDE.  The four days of training were conducted in two parts—2 days in the winter and 2 days in April and gave an in-depth training on the National Health Education Standards and how to successfully implement a “standards based” skills approach to teaching health education, along with training on how to access a wealth of knowledge using the database provided.   •   The Treasure Valley Health Education Network’s winter meeting was held January 22, with 5elementary/secondary participants.  We invited a Boise Police Officer who was a member of a drug/narcotics special task force to speak to our group about current drug trends.   •   The Treasure Valley Health Education Network’s spring meeting was held in April with approx. 12 elementary/secondary participants.  Judy Thorne presented current information regarding STD’s/AIDS, along with a decision making/risk taking health curriculum she has found to be successful with students 4th grade and up.   •   Jeret “Speedy” Peterson, Les Bois and Timberline alum, and current member of the U.S. Winter Olympics team could tell you about his alpine ski races in the annual Dotty Clark Race.  On February 19th, the Mustangs (of West Jr. High, in Boise) slid their hooves into boots after waxing their boards or their skis and boards to race in the valley’s annual event held at Bogus Basin. Dotty Clark would be extremely pleased with the first place finishes by Hailey Neff and Sarah Skinner.   •   A number of Meridian School District elementary schools enjoyed another successful season at Bogus Basin with their ski school program.  Discovery Elementary sent 80 students up to the hill in February, after having the ski school give a winter sport presentation to all fourth and fifth graders.   •   In February, the “First Tee of Idaho” golf/character education program visited Discovery Elementary for four days.  Fourth and Fifth grade PE classes were introduced to putting and pitching while participating in two, one-hour lessons over the course of the four days.  Please visit:  www.thefirstteeidaho.org for more information.    •   On March 6, Jessica Jensen took a team of 16 fourth and fifth graders to the Meridian School District Speed Jump Competition.  A total of 17 elementary schools throughout the Meridian District participated.  Jumpers were honored for placing 1-7th in the forward or backward jog step divisions.   •    To celebrate National PE and Sport Week, the annual “Proclamation Walk” was held Wednesday, May 9 in Boise.  There were approximately 800 participants, with 8 schools from the surrounding area participating.  The ceremony changed venues this year and was held in the Caven Williams Sport Center at Boise State.  Toni Waters’ students from Middleton Height’s Elem. gave an awesome presentation, along with many fantastic student-led activity demonstrations.  The ceremony was concluded with a lap around the BSU track and many photos taken on the blue turf.  Thank you once again to Toni Waters, Ann Pardew-Peck and Miss Holtz for organizing such a wonderful event promoting physical activity!     •   West Jr. High School in Boise is proud to report that this year both the ninth grade and the heavyweight 7/8 football teams galloped to undefeated seasons, while the lightweights placed second.  Ninth grade track and field had either a city champion from the girls or boys each year from 1989 to 1997 with this year, as in the recent past, seeing many of our ninth graders participate in Borah Lions track and field assisting in winning not city championships, but state championships.  The seventh grade ladies and the eighth grade boys were city champions in track and field with the eighth grade ladies finishing second.  The 8th grade JV girls were city champions at 12-2; the eighth grade varsity and JV boys teams both finished second, and the varsity eighth grade girls were undefeated in league play. The resurgence of the wrestling team was seen by city championships in 2005, 2006, and this year.  Tennis, now that the galloping pony express has home court matches, is the sport on the rise; seventh graders were city champions for the first time in decades (maybe ever).    •    The Meridian School District “Fun Run” was held Saturday, April 25.  Over 1000 medals were given out to elementary students, with approximately 2000 people in attendance—a new record for this annual event.  The fun run is a 1.0 mile walk/run held at the Meridian High School Track for Meridian School District families.    •     The Meridian School District is piloting an assessment program using PDA’s to acquire/store/report PE data for various skills and movement concepts.  Approximately six schools will be equipped with PDA’s for the up-coming school year to begin the process of acquiring/storing/reporting data.  The pilot will begin with three units, chasing/fleeing/dodging, striking and throwing with the hopes of expanding to all of the PE units.   •    The current economic situation…budget cuts…job losses, etc.  I was contacted by one of our Treasure Valley Health Education members regarding his recent job loss within the Boise District.  He was among the 200+ first year teachers who were let go.  He is a motivated, experienced teacher just, “chose the wrong year to make the move to the Boise District…”  It’s sad to see qualified teachers forced to leave the profession. Now more than ever we as physical educators need to be positively promoting our PE/Health programs to the community.  In a time where every dollar is going to be scrutinized, we need to show our administrators and community leaders how NEEDED our profession is to our students, staff, community.

Castleford conducted a fun and exciting field day with a Dr. Suess theme.  They took an hour and a half at the end of the day and the students get to hone in on various skills learned throughout the year in their physical education classes. The PTYO sponsors this event and provide participation ribbons for everyone and a treat at the end.  •   Hansen elementary also put on a field day.  They had a lot of fun races and other competitive exercises.  They also walked 4,266 miles this year.  Renea Remaley awarded 49 trophies and 39 medals to the walkers who surpassed others with many miles this year.  A 3rd grade boy ran 55 miles total.  •   Castleford’s Safe and Drug Free Schools program sponsored a Buddy Fishing Event for the 5th grade students.  They got to go to the Hagerman State Fish Hatchery and take a tour to learn about the hatchery, and then they were able to fish in the surrounding ponds.  The high school students and parents also attended to mentor and assist the 5th graders.   •   The Kimberly School District has applied for a Safe Routes to School Grant for the next 2 years.  This grant will provide safe walking paths to school plus promote physical exercise with walking and biking programs/special events.  This grant is a proposal between the city and the school district.  We have proposed to fund a SR2S Coordinator whom will work with the PTSO, K-8 grade PE teachers to develop a walking/biking club, sponsor bike rodeos, and walking school buses.  Even with or without the funding, the cooperation between city and school has been a positive step forward in our district.   •    Kimberly’s wellness committee meets quarterly and promotes wellness among the staff by promoting the spinning and yoga programs, sponsoring a 4-6 grade Girls on the Run program, and works to provide quality food choices for their students.   •   Hansen wrapped up the year with their Rachel's Challenge.  They had an assembly emphasizing kindness and vision.  They looked at what was right with their school and the world.  Then after lunch they went swimming, bowling, or skating.
