Graduate Programs

The Department of Kinesiology at Boise State University offers 3 master’s degrees.

Master of Science in Exercise and Sports Studies (MSESS)

The Master of Science in Exercise and Sport Studies is offered with three areas of emphasis: behavioral, biophysical, and socio-historical. For this degree, students are required to take 9 hours of core requirements in the area of emphasis and 15 to 18 hours of elective credits. Courses in research methods (3 hours) and statistics (3 hours) are offered to prepare students for a thesis. The non-thesis option is no longer available. Students who complete this degree pursue careers in a variety of fields including medical settings and private business, or they seek to continue their education at the doctoral level. Master of Physical Education in Athletic Administration

The Master of Physical Education in Athletic Administration is a cooperative degree agreement between Idaho State University and Boise State University. Students interested in this program must be accepted into the Idaho State graduate program and the Boise State Graduate Program. Students can complete all 33 hours in Boise and take up to 15 credits of BSU courses as part of the program requirements. Specifically, 18 hours of core coursework is required and students can opt for either a thesis (15 hrs) or non-thesis (15 hrs + comprehensive exams) option. Master of Arts in Education, Curriculum and Instruction

The Master of Arts in Education, Curriculum and Instruction with a Physical Education Pedagogy emphasis is offered through the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies (CIFS). For this degree, students are required to complete 33 hours of coursework which includes 6 hours of CIFS courses, 6 hours of required coursework in Kinesiology (pedagogy and research design), 15 hours of elective credits, and 6 hours of EITHER thesis or project credit or comprehensive examinations. Students who complete this degree seek to improve their ability to teach movement skills in a physical education or athletics setting. Most current candidates are teaching in the elementary and secondary schools, or they ultimately desire employment at the collegiate level. Graduate Residential Scholars Program

Participants in the Graduate Residential Scholars Program (GRSP) live in an on-campus residential community of graduate students representing diverse backgrounds and disciplinary interests. Each scholar is awarded a graduate assistantship that includes a stipend ($10,000 per academic year), full waiver of tuition and fees, and free housing in the new and fully furnished University Square Apartments. Twenty GRSP positions were awarded to new and returning graduate students in the fall 2005 semester and approximately 10 positions will be available for fall 2006. Interested students should submit a completed GRSP Application Form. Questions may be directed to Dr. Alfred Dufty, Associate Dean of the Graduate College, Boise State University, Boise, ID, 83725. Note that this date may differ from than the application deadline for the graduate program to which the student is applying. Students interested in the GRSP are encouraged to check with their program coordinator to ensure that their application material is considered prior to the February 1 GRSP deadline.
