Shelley M. Lucas, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Dr. Shelley Lucas earned a PhD in cultural studies of sport and leisure at the University of Iowa in 2001. Her dissertation, Courting Controversy: Gender and Power in Iowa Girls’ Basketball, examined the controversy over switching the high school girls’ basketball rules from the 6-player, half-court game to the current 5-player, full-court game—a change not completed until 1993. Her areas of interest include women’s sport history, gender equity in athletics, and media representations of gender, race, and sexuality in sport. She teaches an introductory course in Kinesiology, graduate courses in sociology and philosophy of exercise and sport, and periodically, special topics courses on gender, media studies, and history. Her current research focuses on the history and culture of Iowa high school girls’ basketball, the history of Idaho’s own Women’s Challenge—the international cycling stage race for women that ran from 1984-2002, and sociological issues related to women’s cycling in general. Dr. Lucas has been active at BSU in issues pertaining to women students, particularly through her service on the Women’s Center and Gender Studies advisory boards, and as the chair of the Gender Equity Subcommittee for the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee.
